|MEETING STARTS - 09:30 - AUGUST 9th
VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY, ST. AUGUSTINE, ROOM 110
Unlike years past we are depending on crowd sourced topics and presenters for main meeting program presentations. As of this time there are no main presentation topics in the queue and no presenters in the queue.
So we will be having just an extended round-table of free form topics.
As the club becomes smaller, it becomes more important than ever to respond to meeting invitations distributed from my Google Calendar. If I do not receive enough YES responses indicating member intentions to participate in a meeting, the meeting will be cancelled!
11 people in all attended the meeting on Saturday, July 12th. Three of the 11 attendees were virtual attendees via Google+ Hangout video chat.

ABOUT SVCHOST.EXE PROCESSES
Topics covered by the above link:
According to Microsoft: “svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries”.
Those services are organized into logical groups, and then a single svchost.exe instance is created for each group. For instance, one svchost.exe instance runs the 3 services related to the firewall. Another svchost.exe instance might run all the services related to the user interface, and so on.
DISABLE SERVICES & STARTUPS WITH MSCONFIG
CAUTION: Utilities are powerful tools for diagnosing and troubleshooting. MSconfig is one such tool included in the Windows OS by Microsoft. It should be used with discretion and a general knowledge of how the Windows OS works. Always be aware you should have a valid backup and restoration plan should you damage your OS.
By judiciously enabling and disabling Startups and Services you may be able to identify the cause of a problem such as slow startup, crashes, and high CPU usage. Generally the cause of crashes are more quickly identifiied by reviewing the Windows OS error logs.
To launch MSconfig on XP --> Windows 7, go to Start > Run, and type “msconfig”. This brings up the System Configuration Utility. You will be greeted with this GUI on Windows 7.
NOTE that Normal startup is selected. This is the default setting for MSconfig. If this is not selected, then something or someone has changed the normal state of the Windows OS settings.
Selecting the Startup tab displays all the programs that start automatically when the computer starts. Below I show some of the programs that start on my computer. NOTE I have sorted the programs according to Manufacturer and moved the slider to display programs from Microsoft. Below I have selected my Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus program.
When troubleshooting, you may be inclined to disable many if not all startups, BUT be aware you may disable your anti-virus program! You will want to decide if it is prudent to do so depending on your problem. In my experience the computer will start and run with all Startups disabled, but don't be surprised by the lack of icons in your Windows Task Tray.
Selecting the Services tab displays all the services that start automatically when the computer starts. This is shown below. Again I have sorted by Manufacturer.
NOTE I have also hidden all Microsoft services by selecting the checkbox in the lower left. Generally, Microsoft services aren't the cause of problems. Problems are more often caused by third party software. Once the Microsoft services are hidden, selecting the Disable All button on the lower right will disable only third party services. Be aware, your anti-virus may run as a service. You will want to decide if it is prudent to disable it depending on your problem.
Once you have disabled the Startups and Services you think prudent, click the Apply and OK buttons. MSconfig will tell you to reboot your computer for the changes to take affect. Your computer will behave differently at startup based on the Startups and Services you have disabled.
