Riot has recently confirmed that from 2023, they will shift from 6 patches a year to 5.
League of Legends: Wild Rift or more commonly known as Wild Rift, is a live service game. Because of it, Riot has to update the game consistently to keep it fresh and retain more players.
Usually, we receive 6 major patches each year. These patches are numbered from 0 to 5 on the back, like 3.1 all the way to 3.5. And each of these patches brings a lot slew of game-changing updates. These game-changing updates could range from new champions, new items, new mechanics, new skins, new Wild Pass, new ranked season, etc.
Moreover, there are also smaller micro patches that take place after the release of a significant update. These more minor updates are usually balance patches, and often they add new skins that did not come out during the release of a significant update.
Recently Wild Rift released a new dev log on their youtube channel. And in that dev log, they have revealed many upcoming contents. However, they have also confirmed that they will be releasing fewer major updates than in previous years.

Wild Rift Will Recieve 5 Major Patches From 2023
In that dev log, Riot announced many upcoming contents in 2023 for Wild Rift. These contents include more Wild Rift exclusive reworked champions like Karma, more exclusive skin lines, marksmen and assassin updates, a new game mode: Ultimate Spellbook, etc. But Riot mentioned in that video that they would release fewer major updates from 2023.
Though it sounds unpleasant, Riot assured players it is a positive change. But instead, we would be getting even more fluent content. We will also get more content in each patch, so the output should be similar to prior years.
One of the examples Riot gave was the elemental rift update. In 2022, Riot spent 3 different major patches fine-tuning this system. They even released a limited-time game mode based on the elemental rift. This game mode was more like a testing ground to determine if Wild Rift’s elemental rift was working as intended.
And the two weeks of extra time Riot will get from this change should give us more extensive content in the significant patches. During this extra time, Riot could do more planning, work on the execution, work on fine-tuning, work on more play tests, etc.
So, this year we will get 5 patches in total. We have already received two of them, 4.0 and 4.1. Now we will receive 3 more patches by the end of this year.
