Riot has unveiled that many champions, including Skarner, Seraphine, and Camille, will receive lore updates in League of Legends and other Runeterra-related projects.
League of Legends has a vast and unique world setting and lore. Not only that, but the story that Riot Games made based on League of Legends is such a success that there are fans who consume the lore but don’t play the game.
There are many ways that players consume these lores. Some of the notable ways are cinematics, Riot Forge games, novels, short stories, Legends of Runeterra, etc.
However, as there are multiple outlets of the same lore, there are bound to be some inconsistencies. For example, the Ruination event completely differs from where you consumed it. In some places, Gwen imprisoned Viego; in others, she didn’t even play any significant roles.
Similarly, another inconsistency is happening currently regarding Hextech. Each different media explains the creation and current state of Hextech differently. And as Skarner, one of the centerpieces of the Hextech lore, is getting reworked, Riot plans to change the lore of some champions.

Skarner & Other Champions Getting Lore Updates
In the original Hextech lore, the Hextech crystals were extracted from the remains of Skarner’s race, Brackern. One of the first clans to harvest these crystals was Camille’s. From there, these Hextech crystals spread to the entire Piltover region.
In Arcane, however, these crystals were given to Jayce by Ryze. Afterward, Jayce recreated these crystals, spreading to the entire Piltover region.
Both mediums tell the story very differently. Moreover, for years, fans thought Arcane was the non-canon version while League of Legends lore is the canon one. But as Skarner, the only remaining Brackern in the game, was getting reworked, Riot decided to overhaul his entire lore.
In the recent dev log, Riot announced that many lore changes would occur in the entire franchise. Firstly, they want to create one unified world across the game. Moreover, the timeline will also be consistent. Instead of events happening years in the past or future, they will be happening in the present to be easily tracked. Riot has also announced that short stories will be discontinued moving forward. Instead, they will be replaced with cinematics, games, etc.
As for the Hextech lore, Riot has confirmed that Arcane will be canon, and whatever happened in Arcane happened in League’s current lore. This means that the current Brackern Hextech origin is retconned.
So moving forward, we will see many lore changes across all League of Legends-related IPs. Ultimately, it will make consuming lore-related products more accessible and more interesting.
