The action-packed zombie apocalypse title from Dambuster Studios has been surprisingly released on Xbox’s subscription service.

Dead Island 2 has been launched on Xbox Game Pass and is currently available for download. The game suddenly appeared in the ‘recently added’ section on the Xbox Store without official announcements from Microsoft or publisher Deep Silver. The long-awaited sequel of 2011’s Dead Island was released in 2023 and sold over 2 million copies worldwide across all platforms just two weeks after release.

Earlier this month, Xbox Wire announced the upcoming games coming to Xbox’s subscription service from February to March 2024 in a blog post. Return to Grace, Tales of Arise, Bluey: The Videogame, Maneater, Madden NFL 24, Indivisible, Space Engineers, and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun are all new games coming to Xbox Game Pass in March 2024.

Dead Island 2 Gets a Surprise Release on Xbox Game Pass

Renowned Twitter user Wario64 first noticed and posted about Dead Island 2’s arrival on the Xbox Game Pass. Moments after Wario’s post, the game’s developers posted on the social media platform that the game was available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers. However, the game is available only on the console and via cloud service for Game Pass subscribers.

Microsoft may have wanted this low-key Game Pass release to serve as a consolation prize for the Xbox community’s outrage over the company’s decision to release Pentiment, Grounds on the Nintendo Switch, Hi-Fi Rush, and Sea of Thieves on the PlayStation 5.

Here is a quick summary of everything announced at the new Xbox podcast.

Microsoft published a new podcast featuring Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, Xbox President Sarah Bond, and Head of Xbox Studios Matt Booty. On the podcast, the heads of the company addressed all the rumors and talked about all the new strategies and the long-term future of Xbox and Microsoft’s gaming division.

On the podcast, Spencer and the rest of the Xbox team talked about the future plan for Xbox, Game Pass, and the games being released for multiple platforms. In addition, the team also spoke about the upcoming Xbox console’s hardware, which will be significantly more powerful than the current generation console.

Here is everything that was announced at the Xbox’s business event podcast.

Phil Spencer confirmed that four Xbox-exclusive titles will be coming to other consoles, more notably on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. However, Spencer did not reveal which titles would be coming to other platforms. The titles that will be released are reportedly exclusives that have been on Xbox for at least a year.

Even though Phil Spencer did not reveal which titles will be released to rival platforms, he left out those announcements for the respective studios. However, Spencer’s statement and the official Xbox blog suggest that two of the four titles are Pentiment and Sea of Thieves.

Diablo 4 is Coming to Xbox Game Pass

On the podcast, it’s revealed that Diablo 4 will be the Activision Blizzard to come to Xbox Game Pass on March 28, 2024. After Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard and laid off many employees across the studios, more games will come to Xbox’s subscription service.

The Mass Layoffs is Making Xbox to Go Multiplatform

Spencer said on the podcast that the gaming industry did not grow a lot in 2023, even though a number of big video games were released. Several big-profile studios also laid off a large number of employees from their companies, including Microsoft.

According to Spencer, these layoffs influenced the company to extend Xbox’s gaming division and go multiplatform. He added that the company needed to expand beyond Xbox’s player base to keep the company healthy and maintain jobs.

Starfield and Indiana Jones Is Not Coming To PlayStation 5

During the podcast, Phil Spencer was asked if Microsoft had plans to release Starfield and the upcoming Indiana Jones on PlayStation 5. Spencer answered that Starfield and Indiana Jones will not be released on Sony’s console.

However, The Verge published an interview with Phil Spencer minutes after the podcast ended. In the interview, Spencer did not rule out that these games could come to competing consoles in the future. He added that the company will launch four titles on other consoles and then decide the next plan.

At the end of the podcast, Spencer mentioned that Microsoft will announce an “interesting hardware news” this Christmas. He said the company has started investing in the next generation of consoles and hardware.

It was heavily rumored that Microsoft was working on an updated version of the Xbox Series consoles, and Spencer’s statement may indicate that the company is currently working on them. Spencer also said that the company still views Xbox consoles as “the most flagship, seminal experience” for the brand. Furthermore, Sarah Bond added that the company is working on the next-generation Xbox, which will be “the largest technical leap you’ve ever seen in a hardware generation.”

New reports suggest that Microsoft plans to take Xbox games everywhere, including rival platforms like PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.

New rumors suggest that Microsoft is preparing to release a number of Xbox-exclusive titles on Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Microsoft will reportedly release the highly rumored Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment, initially released for Xbox consoles in February 2023 and November 2022 respectively.

In addition, Sea of Thieves from Rare Limited was also one of the titles rumored to be released on multiple platforms later this year alongside Hi-Fi Rush. It was previously reported that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Gears of War, and Starfield were coming to PlayStation. However, industry leaker NateTheHate later shut down the rumor that Starfield will remain Xbox-exclusive.

Xbox Games To Become Multi-Platform

According to Tom Warren from The Verge, sources close to Microsoft claimed that the company is preparing to release a number of Xbox titles to Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.

Microsoft plans to expand its business because the Xbox Series X and Series S console sales are far behind Sony’s PlayStation 5. Moreover, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has admitted that Xbox Game Pass subscriptions have recently slowed down. Above all, Microsoft’s gaming division performed poorly in 2022, and Spencer called it a dry year because Bethesda’s Starfield was delayed till 2023.

Tom Warren mentioned in his reports that the first two games released for PlayStation 5 or possibly other consoles are Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment. In addition, Microsoft is also considering releasing other first-party Xbox titles to release on rival platforms.

Microsoft’s decision to change Xbox’s business strategy is surprising and something the company probably did not take lightly. However, this change will result in the company generating more revenue in gaming but will lose the Xbox exclusivity in the process.

Phil Spencer announced earlier in February 2024 that the company will address the future of Xbox in a business event. Later, on February 12, 2024, Microsoft announced that the company would host the business event on February 15, 2024. Phil Spencer, Xbox president Sarah Bond, and Xbox’s president of game content and studios Matt Booty will address the issues and discuss Xbox’s plan for the future on a podcast from 12 PM PT / 3 PM RT / 8 PM GMT.

Microsoft’s head of gaming, Phil Spencer, has told employees that Microsoft has no plans to stop making Xbox consoles and that the consoles will be a part of its strategy. Few weeks ago, Microsoft laid off 1,900 of its 22,000 employees, mostly from Activision Blizzard and a few from Xbox. It was also reported that Microsoft has shut down departments responsible for releasing Xbox games and other physical products to retail. As a result, employees within Xbox were concerned that Microsoft was trying to go digital only and stop the production of the Xbox console.

Microsoft Will Be Making Xbox Consoles In The Future

According to journalist Shannon Liao, Microsoft’s head of gaming, Phil Spencer, notified staff members that Xbox is not planning to stop console production and that Xbox consoles will remain an important part of the company’s overall strategy, including “multiple kinds of devices.”

Rumours suggest that Microsoft is working on an Xbox Series X|S refresh, and both consoles are expected to be digital-only. The tech giant plans to go digital only, as some of the upcoming Xbox games will be released digitally only. For example, Ninja Theory’s upcoming AAA title, “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II,” is expected to be only released digitally.

Phil Spencer announced that Xbox will be hosting a business event soon where the company will share its vision for the future of Xbox. The community now has to wait for what Spencer and the Xbox team to announce and if the company has decided to make big changes to its business strategy. In addition, if Xbox still wants to keep producing consoles in the future.

Starfield Will Remain Xbox Exclusive

Reputable insider and leaker NateTheHate posted on Twitter to shut down rumours that Starfield will not be coming to PlayStation 5. On Twitter, Nate said, “I’ve rechecked the info mentioned below & the information suggesting Starfield was PS5-bound is false.”

According to Nate’s sources, the previous information was inaccurate, and Starfield will never come to PlayStation. However, Nate only spoke about Starfield but did not mention any other title in his tweets. Gears of War was another big title rumoured to be coming to PlayStation 5.

However, the rumours of Starfield and other titles coming to PlayStation 5 prompted Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer to address the issue. He later announced that Xbox would host a business event where the company will share its “vision for the future of Xbox.”

Tom Warren of The Verge reported that Microsoft is ready to reveal details on bringing previous Xbox-exclusive games to consoles like Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. According to Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, Microsoft is reportedly considering bringing the Gears of War franchise to PlayStation. Although the company did not announce anything publicly, the rumors suggest that Microsoft is ready to release previous Xbox-exclusive titles to Sony’s console.

Gears of War Coming to PlayStation?

On the latest Giant Bomb livestream, Jeff Grubb said that Microsoft is thinking about bringing the Gears of War series to PlayStation. Grubb stated that Microsoft and Xbox are definitely considering bringing the classic Gears of War games and other Xbox exclusives to other platforms.

The other one that I’ve heard that’s definitely under consideration—it doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen, but it’s in talks—is Gears of War.

Gears of War is being considered for this.

The other thing I can corroborate is a rumor that there will be something at the end of February when they’re going to explain this change – that is something that they definitely were talking about.

In addition, Grubb also mentioned that Microsoft was planning to explain its initiative at the end of February 2024. However, the company could announce them early after all the news broke within 24 hours.

After the mass layoffs at Activision Blizzard, this new Xbox marketing is concerning to gamers. Some gamers in the community are questioning if the decisions are good for the long run for Xbox as a platform. One of the biggest RPGs developed by Bethesda will be released for PlayStation 5 sometime later in 2024.

Starfield is an action role-playing game developed and published by Bethesda. The game features a massive open world within the Milky Way galaxy, containing both fictional and non-fictional planetary systems. After being delayed several times, Starfield was released on September 6, 2023, for Xbox Series X/S and Windows PC.

Even though Starfield was one of the biggest titles released in 2023, the game was launched as an Xbox exclusive since Bethesda is owned by Microsoft, leaving PlayStation 5 behind. However, new reports claim that Microsoft is planning to Bethesda’s popular RPG to PlayStation 5 with some additional features later in 2024.

Starfield’s Possible Release on PlayStation 5

According to a new report from XboxEra, an anonymous source claimed that Bethesda and Microsoft are planning to release the popular RPG on Sony’s current generation console. In addition, Microsoft is also planning to bring the previously rumored Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves to PlayStation 5.

XboxEra’s anonymous sources also mentioned that Microsoft is preparing to launch Starfield on PlayStation 5 with the already announced “Shattered Space” expansion for Xbox and PC. The source also stated that Microsoft has made additional investments in PlayStation 5 developer kits to support the ongoing development. Shattered Space expansion was targeted to release for Xbox and PC sometime later this year.

The report stated that the hit titles Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves will be coming to PlayStation, and Hi-Fi Rush could be released as soon as in Q1 2024. The source claimed that Microsoft will publicly announce the game’s arrival on PlayStation 5 later in February 2024.

Releasing Starfield on PlayStation would be a significant change in Microsoft’s business strategy. Sarah Bond, the president of Xbox, previously stated that Starfield was going to be an Xbox exclusive. According to the XboxEra report, some senior employees are not happy with the decision to bring an Xbox exclusive to PlayStation.

Microsoft senior leadership have reportedly debated the various pros and cons of releasing more of their exclusive software elsewhere, and internally, not everyone is necessarily happy with the decision, but recouping the potential money ‘left on the table’ by not releasing elsewhere has arguably won out.
