Mojang warned players not to update Minecraft through the Xbox app on PC as it could make their worlds disappear.

Minecraft’s latest update dropped earlier this week, but many PC players are losing their worlds. Developer Mojang warned that users who update Minecraft through the PC Xbox app risk erasing their worlds. The developer recommends running the Gaming Services Repair Tool on the Xbox App for PC before downloading the latest Minecraft update.

Do not download the recent update for Minecraft through the Xbox app for PC. If you do, your worlds may be lost. We’re continuing to investigate this world loss issue and are currently blocking the update from Windows to prevent the possibility of lost worlds.

Mojang later instructed how to run the Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC in the Xbox app on PC before installing the Minecraft update. Here is how to run the Gaming Services Repair Tool on a PC:

  • Launch the Xbox App on PC
  • Click your Profile Picture
  • Click on Support
  • Click on Gaming Services Repair Tool
  • Click on Start Troubleshooting

Minecraft players on PC should use the Xbox app to manage updates as it can sometimes auto-update the game. Players should adjust the settings to stop Minecraft from auto-updating so they do not risk losing their worlds.
