Riot has revealed the patch notes for Legends of Runeterra Patch 5.1. Here’s everything you need to know.

This year hasn’t been great for Legends of Runeterra. To recap, Riot made massive internal restructuring. This, in turn, led to 11% of their workforce being laid off. There are two places within Riot who got impacted by this change the most. The first is Riot Forge, and the other is Legends of Runeterra.

We already talked about the Riot Forge situation, but in short, Riot Forge got shut down. While the LoR situation isn’t as bad as Riot Forge, it’s still not positive, either. Firstly, the competitive scene is on hibernation currently. Additionally, many of the LoR designers also got laid off as well. With all of these, they will now primarily focus on PvE rather than PvP.

With that said, players didn’t expect a new patch to come out this soon after this announcement. Regardless, Riot Games has revealed the patch 5.1 notes for Legends of Runeterra.

The new constellation system expansion in Legends of Runeterra will bring new champions, increase the maximum number of stars for a champion, and more.

Legends of Runeterra is already regarded as one of the most complex collectible card games out there. Enriched stories, regular updates, variety in game modes, and nuanced mechanics make the game stand out from its competition.

Despite not being known for its beginner-friendliness, Riot Games has no intentions to dial down its gameplay complexity. Instead, they keep pushing the boundary with each major update. This time they are bringing a major update to Path of Champions, the single-player rogue-like game mode.

Before getting into the details, it’s worth talking about the present state of the game. Currently, the star limit you can reach with your champion gets maxed out at 3 upgrades. Champion fragments, obtained through completing campaigns and world adventures or completing chapter quests, are needed to get stars.

These stars are very significant due to the power they provide to the champions. The more the stars, the more powerful the abilities of a champion become. They are essential to tackle the increased difficulties in some campaigns.

In the Constellations system update, Riot Games is to bring massive changes to the PvE game mode, Path of Champions. In this article, I will debrief you on the changes coming.

Constellation System Expansion in Legends of Runeterra

So, the upcoming constellation system will augment the star number cap for champions from 3 to 6. This is a massive change because the incremental boost in power from 1 star to the next is huge in terms of the card’s impact on the gameplay.

Not to mention, this also increases the scope for grinding as you will need to complete more campaigns and adventures to get those champion fragments. The increased star power will help the players deal with adventures in Freljord.

However, this change is not limited to the existing champions. Riot will be introducing more champions to the Path of Champions mode, including Aatrox. Norra, an original LoR champion, will also be coming along with some portal gameplay.

Hence, the game’s campaign will feel more expansive now. Added that with the announcement of more story content, LoR will be dense with tons of new things to try out for the PvE enjoyers.

Legends of Runeterra’s single-player roguelike-mode Path of Champions will go back to more story-based content.

Legends of Runeterra, just like League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics, share the same, joint universe. The interconnectedness of Runeterra makes the lore very appealing to people who can appreciate the story. While Lol is more focused on the gameplay and the grind, LoR tries to dump as much LoR as possible.

Path of Champions is a great story-driver for the game. It’s a single-player rogue-like mode where you play against AI enemies in different locations. The cards in the decks keep changing and evolving as you progress. Also at the start of a campaign, you get to choose a champion, based on which the narrative progresses. Each champion’s journey is different. Through multiple campaigns, you get to unravel a lot of the mysteries surrounding the greater Runeterra.

Recently, the mode dialed down on its storytelling aspect. Riot has given an update on the future of Path of Champions that I will be discussing in this article.

More Densely Packed Story-Based Content in Path of Champions

In response to a Twitter user’s query, Rioter Eric Shen has revealed that there will indeed be more story-based content in Path of Champions mode.

However, not every champion will get the same amount of story content. That is understandable because not every champion has equal weight to the story. Elder Dragon, for example, as the Rioter adds. Also, some of the champions, such as Aatrox, Lux, Morgana, etc have more polished lore already than some of the more recent additions.

But you can be certain of having more story content in PoC. I am assuming they will be maintaining lore consistency, as Riot stated not too long ago that they will be tying up all the inconsistent threads.

Overall, it’s a great decision and something to be excited about if you enjoy exploring all the details of the champions in the Runeterra universe.

Legends of Runeterra failed in the Collectible Card Games (CCG) market for both technical and strategic reasons.

Legends of Runeterra (LoR) is a card game from Riot Games. It shares the same universe as League of Legends. You can find all the champions and characters from the giant, unified world of Runeterra. When it comes to lore exploration, Legends of Runeterra is a gold mine. The gameplay aspect of it, emphasizing strategic deck building, is brilliant enough as well.

Compared to Hearthstone, with more than 50 million active monthly players, LoR has barely 10 million under its belt. This is a low number considering it’s being a part of the shared Lol universe, which should have attracted a much bigger population.

Legends of Runeterra blended gameplay concepts from other successful card games such as Magic: The Gathering, Gwent, etc. while also adding its own formula to it. Despite having a nuanced card game, it didn’t become nearly as successful as you would expect from it.

In this article, I will share my own 2 cents on this matter.

Legends of Runeterra: Reasons for Failure in the CCG Market

  1. Saturated Market

The first and foremost reason for LoR failing to succeed in the CCG market is that the market itself is overly saturated. If you look at the market, there are 100s of card games there. Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic The Gathering, Pokemon, etc are all big names that had already dominated the market.

Think about Riot’s most successful games. League of Legends, Valorant, and even TFT had massive success. LoL was sort of like the first MOBA game to get mainstream appeal, despite succeeding Dota.

VALORANT was released when Counter-Strike died, and the FPS market was saturated with battle royale games. VALORANT introduced a fresh breath of air to the tactical shooter market and due to its low-skill floor, it captured the market very quickly and is still rapidly growing.

For LoR, there was no factor working for it in that regard.

2. Complex Game Design

Usually, this would be considered a pro for a card game. The hardcore fans would love to select from a plethora of decks in different combinations. However, it also creates a high skill barrier for entry. Most of the popular card games are very straightforward. “Your turn, My turn” – LoR detracted from this philosophy and isolated a huge chunk of casual players.

The overabundance of regions in the game creates pain for card balancing and distribution. LoR also had issues with being repetitive, and decks being tied up to certain characters only. This added to the unintuitiveness as well.

On the other hand, Hearthstone, despite being a fairly simple and boring game (compared to LoR), attracts a wide audience. Because the card players are kind of inert when it comes to exploring other card games. Especially, since there is no reason to move and explore something with many more layers of nuances.

3. Marketing

Riot Games are really good marketers, that’s for sure. But for LoR, there’s practically no effort from the marketing team. Personally speaking, I have never seen any Ad that even remotely talks about LoR. On the other hand, I have read about Magic: The Gathering from countless of web-page ads on my Android phone.

Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokemon, etc. card games get massive traction from their other industry products, such as Anime, other video games, etc. LoR has League of Legends by its side but even a lot of the LoL players haven’t heard of LoR.

4. Monetization

Riot maintains its Free-to-Play policy for LoR as well when it comes to providing the players with a competitive edge. You can be competitive in the game without being motivated to spend a single cent. Because Riot doesn’t want it. On the other hand, Hearthstone, for example, requires you to spend money to build a competitive deck. Then there’s Marvel Snap who implemented a soft progression cap.

LoR’s monetization is only relevant for getting Wildcards. But even if you play the game for free, all the essential cards will come to you at the right pace because the game wants you to give the freedom.

This is quite in contrast with Magic: The Gathering’s monetization system. To play non-standard game mode, use historic cards in ranked format or basic land arts – everything is blocked behind a paywall. Then there are booster packs, singles market, etc. that players actively spend money on.

Gwent has Kegs (containing random cards to improve Gwent decks), card skins, avatars, game boards, reward books, etc that can be purchased with money.

In these games, a player who spends money and a player who doesn’t will experience entirely different worlds in terms of progression and competitive deck building. But a LoR player will practically feel little to no difference in that regard. Yes, there’s monetization involved for skins, card backs, etc. cosmetics but they aren’t gameplay-related.

Even boards and guardians can be purchased through in-game coins. You can choose to buy coins with real money. But that’s an option only. You will never feel forced to.

Riot Games emphasizes a generous free-to-play experience by rewarding players with a steady stream of cards, in-game currency, and cosmetics through regular gameplay. Monetization is strictly optional.

Because of the above issues, especially the saturated market, a total lack of marketing efforts, and suboptimal monetization methods (considering the CCG market), LoR has failed to realize its goal.

Needless to mention, the free-to-play experience, added with high complexity game design axed its player base, to the point there aren’t enough players to even spend on the game. All these factors contributed to the massive failure of the game.

Amongst a massive company-wide restructuring and layoffs, Riot has announced some important plans for LoR or Legends of Runeterra, including focusing primarily on PvE.

Released in 2020, Legends of Runeterra has been the premier card game from Riot Games. Additionally, it takes place in the universe of League of Legends, so LoR greatly expands on the lore of the game as well.

As a card game, LoR is the fairest of them all. Card games are not known to be free-to-play friendly. Besides Marvel Snap, no other free-to-play card games work in the current market. Even so, Legends of Runeterra remained a staple game in the CCG space.

However, even the community realized from very early on that LoR is not a sustainable game. Traditional CCG makes money by selling packs like Hearthstone, MTG, Pokemon TCG, etc. However, you get all of the cards by just playing and getting Wildcards, shards, chests, etc.

Additionally, it is no secret that LoR’s PvP and competitive is not as active as other CCGs. Even though the addition of the rotation queue added an influx of new players from other games, sadly, it’s still not enough.

Recently, Riot Games has announced massive company-wide restructuring, including layoffs of around 11% of their workforce. Alongside this, they have also announced some important things regarding some of their games. One such game is Legends of Runeterra.

Read more: Riot Games Lays Off 530 Employees, Also Shuts Down Riot Forge.

What’s Going On With Legends of Runeterra?

As stated before, Riot Games went on a massive restructuring recently. From there, we saw that around 530 Rioters were getting laid off from the company. Not only that, they are also changing their approach to their business strategy. Two places that will feel this impact immediately are Riot Forge and Legends of Runeterra.

Even though we already talked about Riot Forge earlier, I will still talk about it briefly. Riot is sunsetting the Riot Forge after releasing their upcoming game, Bandle Tale.

And about Legends of Runeterra, as stated before, the game isn’t as profitable as the rest of the games in the Riot Games catalog. Due to this, we have seen many changes in their monetization strategy over the game’s lifespan. Even so, it didn’t really help much in LoR’s case. Therefore, we have seen massive layoffs in the LoR team.

Future of LoR: Path of Champions PvE Contents & More

path of champions

Although LoR isn’t that profitable, its future isn’t as grim as Riot Forge’s. One game mode that really keeps players engaged in Legends of Runeterra is the Path of Champions game mode. On release, it doubled the player counts of the game. Due to this reason, Riot expanded on it with Path of Champions 2.0. Around that time, most players spent most of their time playing Path of Champions rather than other modes.

Path of Champions is definitely the way forward. However, what does that mean for PvP content? Even though Riot didn’t mention anything about PvP, we can expect they won’t be as regularly updated as before. This is sad news if you mainly play ranked or even a pro player yourself.

But Path of Champions might be what the player base actually needs. Since most casual LoR players already only play this PvE mode, if Riot focuses primarily on it, we will see even more players than before. Thus, this game will be more sustainable.

Even though they didn’t emphasize it, LoR is now part of the League studios. Thus, people who oversee League of Legends will also oversee LoR as well. This means it will all be led by Meddler. And from his track record, we can be assured that the game is in the right hands.

And finally, on 2 February 2024, Riot Meddler, Eric, Marc Merrill, and Dave will talk extensively about Legends of Runeterra. So we will know more information on that date.

Legends of Runeterra is a card game based on the universe of League of Legends. It is very similar to card games like Hearthstone, but LoR has more depth, and cards are easier to obtain. This game was released in 2020 and is still the most accessible card game on the market.

There are many customization options in Legends of Runeterra. Players can customize their decks, card backs, boards, guardians, and even champions through skins. Even though most of these items are bought with premium currency, Coins, players can still earn most of the contents for free.

Riot Games, the creator of LoR, is actively partnering with Amazon. Because of this, they provide different in-game content through Amazon’s Prime subscription. Players can earn many rewards in League of Legends, Valorant, or Legends of Runeterra through this service.

Riot Games announces that they are ending their promotion partnership with Prime Gaming.

Amazon Prime Gaming is a service whereby players can get in-game content in many partnered games. One of the significant Amazon Prime Gaming partners is Riot Games. With Amazon Prime Gaming, players can earn free rewards in all of Riot Games’ IPs. These games include League of Legends, Legends of Runeterra, Wild Rift, Teamfight Tactics, and VALORANT.

Each game offers unique rewards for their players. Most notably, in League of Legends, players could get the premium currency or RP for free just by claiming the prime rewards. Additionally, players have also gotten an entire free champion skin in Wild Rift.

Furthermore, Amazon is one of the consistent partners of Riot Games when it comes to esports. It is common nowadays to see Amazon promotions in League of Legends Worlds or Valorant VCT.

With that said, Riot has recently revealed that Amazon won’t be renewing the Prime Gaming promotions with Riot Games.

No More Prime Gaming Loot In Riot Games IPs

As mentioned before, Riot has recently confirmed on Twitter that Amazon Prime Gaming won’t be renewing their promotional partnership. While it means many things, most importantly, players won’t be able to claim Prime Gaming Loot for their favorite Riot IP for much longer.

There could be a plethora of reasons why Amazon has taken this route. But the most likely reason is that players don’t usually pay for Amazon Prime to get these loots. They usually just make a new account to get the 7-day free trial and claim these rewards.

As for when this promotion will end, Riot mentioned that players can still get Prime Gaming Loot till March 2024. Afterward, these capsules will be discontinued for the foreseeable future. Riot has yet to announce whether there will be any alternatives for these monthly rewards but they have a few months to figure things out moving forward.

After the release of an expansion, Riot releases a variety patch to keep the game interesting. These patches add new skins and cards, adjust existing cards, etc. And as it has been some time since the release of the last expansion, Riot has revealed the newest variety patch, 4.11.

This patch will introduce new cards into the game, like Chemtech Drake, Trusty Adnere, Spitfire, etc. Moreover, Trusty Adnere and Adnere’s Aviarists are based on the real-life LoR player Rusticles, who has ALS. Additionally, for every ‘Adnere’s Adventure’ quest completion from Nov 7 – Dec 6, Riot will contribute $1 to the Riot Games Social Impact Fund.

Alongside all the new cards and adjustments, we are getting new skins in patch 4.11 of Legends of Runeterra based on music. Furthermore, these skins are unique to Legends of Runeterra and Teamfight Tactics.

In a recent thread on X (Twitter), Riot has explained how all skins are not exclusive to certain games.

Over the course of the past few years, cosmetics have become a lifeblood for all Riot Games. League of Legends has the most popularity, while other likes like VALORANT, Wild Rift, Legends of Runeterra, and Teamfight Tactics are not that far off.

With so many cosmetics coming out, Riot started producing some exclusive skins for their games. These were cosmetics that were strictly part of one game for release. While it was great for those games, it didn’t sit well with many of the players of the other games. This affects the League of Legends universe games more than anything.

The similarity of the World between League of Legends, Legends of Runeterra, and Wild Rift is apparent, and it shocked players as to why any of these games had exclusive skins. However, Riot has started porting some of Wild Rift’s skins over to League of Legends. So we have had some skins like the upcoming Redeemed Star Guardian Rakan and Xayah skins ported over to League of Legends.

In light of all of this, the Riot Lead of Legends of Runeterra, Matt Buchholtz, chimed into this topic and said that skins are not exclusive to games. He also shed some light on what happens behind the scenes. So, here is what was said in a huge thread of X (Twitter).

Skins Not Being Exclusive To Games

So starting from the top, Matt Buchholtz says right of the bat that skins coming to Legends of Runeterra does not mean they are locked out of other games.

This is due to the fact that the different teams at Riot are making all the exclusive skins for all their IPs. So, as the exclusive skins are made independently, they do not appear in all the games at the same time. However, there are still some skin lines, like Star Guardian and Soul Fighter, that are cross-game skin lines.

So Matt Buchholtz encourages players to share their opinions on what they want in their games. Hence, if they see a cosmetic they like in one Riot game, players can request it for another Riot game. Of course, it goes without saying that it should be a request and an ask, but not inflammatory. Riot has listened to these asks before (although not a lot), but it does not hurt to try.

Matt Buchholtz also shared where players can share their feedback.

So, all in all, this is great news for fans and players to get a skin they like in another Riot game to their preferred game. Thus, make sure to comment and ask for what you want, and Riot will talk about it internally. If anything, the past year or so has shown that Riot does listen to players if there is enough noise that is not inflammatory and such.
