The largest video game company in the world is bringing the blockbuster hit to mobile devices.

Tencent, the largest video game company based in China, is currently working on adapting Elden Ring, the hit action role-playing title, into a mobile version. In 2023, Tencent bought a 16% stake in the Japanese game maker FromSoftware, the maker of Elden Ring. The Chinese video game giant acquired the licensing rights for the game and assigned a team to work on a prototype, although the progress has been slow.

Elden Ring is an action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware on February 25, 2022. The game was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, with the world-building provided by fantasy writer George R. R. Martin. Elden Ring sold almost 20 million copies in 2022, making it the second best-selling game for the year behind Pokémon Scarlet / Violet.

Elden Ring on Mobile in the Works

According to a Reuters report, Tencent is actively working on bringing the 2022 blockbuster hit to mobile devices. In addition, the report stated that Tencent plans to make it a free-to-play game with in-game purchases. However, Elden Ring was released with a $60 price tag by FromSoftware in 2020.

Tencent and FromSoftware did not respond to any questions from Reuters, and the rumor source declined to be named as they were not permitted to speak to media outlets. Even though Tencent has a good track record with mobile games, as PUBG Mobile has been a worldwide hit after its release, the Chinese company is struggling to compete in the market.

It was reported recently that Tencent canceled a ‘Nier’ game for mobile devices over monetization concerns. Given that the gaming market is declining and games can be barely profitable due to high royalties, Tencent has changed its approach to pursuing games based on other companies’ franchises over the past year.
